During my first year of teaching almost 10 years ago, I knew that learning through music was an extremely powerful way to engage students and produce lasting learning results. Teaching in an urban school setting, I began taking popular songs and changing the lyrics to match language learning objectives. I added visual aids and TPR motions to the songs and was amazed at the results. This week, I am releasing a new music video featuring a song I recorded back in 2006. The initial target demographic was for upper elementary students in a FLES elementary Spanish program. Check out a preview of the song below. Senor Ashby subscribers have full access to the song here.In addition to this song, I also have begun to develop song resources for my Paco y Anita Rap. Thus far, I have just added the lyrics, as well as a powerpoint with lyrics and visual aids. I plan to expand this soon to lesson plan ideas and other resources. Senor Ashby subscribers can access the resources here. Check out the Paco y Anita Rap below.

My students love this rap. I printed out the lyrics and am going to have them create their own version of the rap with different occupations. Do you have any other suggestions? I just discovered and signed up for full access of your website. I may have overlooked the lessons created for Los Profesiones.

Hey Kristen! I'm so glad your kids like it! That sounds like a great idea! I do not have lessons for this song on the site, though adding lessons for my songs here would certainly be a long term goal! One fun thing I used to do was a few different versions of charades... where students had to guess (usually in small groups) the words/phrases based on the actions. However... I would make them really hard and sometimes silly... like Have them act out la policia apaga los fuegos, or el banquero manda paquetes y cartas... honestly I only taught that unit 1 year and we changed curriculum! I'd be happy to brainstorm through some ideas with you though!
