My wife and I are excited to welcome Jonah Michael to our family! He was born this past Friday, December 16. His 3 older brothers: ages 8, 6, and 3 are just as excited as their parents to have him join the family!

Thank you all for your song suggestions so far! We have received a lot of interest so far from classrooms across the U.S. and I am very excited about bringing Spanish students together from across the country to participate! As a reminder, I will post a bracket of 16 songs popular Spanish songs, and then two songs will "battle" each day. I will post youtube videos of those songs here on my website, along with an online poll for students to vote on which song they liked better. The tournament will last 3 weeks in March and end up with one grand winner! Here are some additional rules: |
Vivir Mi Vida- Marc Anthony | Waka Waka- Shakira | El Mismo Sol- Alvaro Soler |
Spread the word! The more classes participating, the more fun it will be!
I just recently added a new lyric video for my irregular verb rap! This song is a very repetitive and rhythmic chant to help students remember the verb conjugations for ser, tener, and querer. This was a song that I recorded almost ten years ago! At the time, the idea I had was to have a high pitched voice and a low pitched voice for the 3rd and 4th time through the chant for each verb as a way to keep the song interesting and allow me to have competitions in class where different groups of students sang different parts of the song to see who can do it the best. If I still had the original recording, I would go back make the low pitched voice a little higher and less creepy! :) Although I have since made separate songs for ser, tener, and e to ie stem changers, I still often use this song in class and find it to be a great memorization tool! Students should stand up and do TPR motions to go with the chant. A preview the song is in the Youtube video below. Sr. Ashby subscribers can access that video here.
I am inviting Spanish classrooms across the globe to participate in my March Madness tournament!
Here is how it will work:
- I will create a bracket of 16 authentic songs: i.e.- El mismo Sol, Vivir Mi Vida, etc.
-I will post that bracket here on my site and update it as the month progresses.
-There will be a schedule posted for Spanish classrooms to follow.
-Each day for 16 days two songs will square off head to head.
-Students will listen to each of the songs posted and then vote in an online poll as to which song they like better. That song will advance to the next round.
-Students can comment on blog posts in the target language about what they liked about the songs. I will monitor blog posts for appropriate comments. :)
-If I can get volunteers, classrooms can put together a short fake news reports in Spanish about the results of each "match". They could even include a fake interview with the musical artists asking them how it felt to win, lose, etc. I will share those news reports for classrooms to view. Great comprehensible input opportunity! Great project for a group of advanced students, or native Spanish speakers!
***I hope you all can join us, I think your students will have a blast!
Look for more details in Febuary on my blog, or follow me on Facebook to stay up to date!
Do you want to get actively involved in this process?
-Comment on this blog post for the songs you'd like to see included in the bracket.
-Email me at [email protected] if you have a group of students who would like to make a short news report on one of the song results!
